Special Olympics

Since Evan is in first grade, he was eligable to participate in the Special Olympics at Kutztown University on April 22nd. All the school districts from Berks County had participants, so there were a lot of kids there. I took the day off of work to go and watch. The day was cool and cloudy, but at least the rain held off until later in the afternoon.

Evan was a participant in the 50-meter dash, the softball throw, and the standing long jump. His first event of the day was the 50-meter dash. He did a GREAT job!! He and Mrs. Strackbein (his favorite aide in school) were in the lead until the very end when he slowed up. He still got second place with a time of 14.43 seconds. I was a happy and proud mom! He then went back to Kutztown's resting area and had some lunch. After lunch Mrs. Hartz (his teacher), Mrs. Strackbein and myself took him to the 2 other events. By that point it had been a long day, and he was NOT in the mood to be throwing a softball, but he did it, along with the long jump, where he got 6th and 5th place, respectively.

Here are some photos of the day. It was a really neat day and everyone was so encouraging to all the kids. I realized while sitting there watching all these wonderful kids that we are so unbelieveable blessed to have Evan. He may have his challenges in life, but what joy and love he has brought to us and will continue to bring to us outweighs any hardships that we face.
